The European Year of Culture Heritage 2018

In Košice, the European Capital of Culture for 2013 there are many
- sights to see but we choose to celebrate the European Year of
- Culture Heritage 2018 with visiting the Saint Elisabeth Cathedral
- in Košice historical city centre.Saint Elisabeth Cathedral is the
- eastern most located Gothic cathedral in Europe and Slovakia´s
- largest church. After climbing 165 stairs of the Sigismund tower
- we could have the most beautiful view of the city centre.
UNESCO heritage in Slovakia
In Slovakia there are 5 places of cultural and 2 places of natural
interests on UNESCO World Heritage List. These are:
- the Spiš castle and associated cultural monuments
- Bardejov town conservation reserve
- historic centre of Banská Štiavnica
- Vlkolínec, a traditional European village with wooden log houses
- wooden churches in Hervartov,Tvrdošín, Kežmarok, Ladomírova
- ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians
- caves of Slovak Karst
Spiš castle
Ruins of the Spiš castle are the largest medival castle complex in
Central Europe. The castle was fouded in the 12th century and
gradually enlarged. Its area has more than 4 ha and is situated on
a travertine hill above the town of Spišské Podhradie. At the
beginning it was a boundry fort placed at the northern frontier of
an early Old Hungarian state.Afterwards it became the seat of the
head of Spis region for many centuries. The castle was one of the
few castles in Central Europe to resist the Mongol attacks in 1241.
In 1780 the castle compund was destroyed by fire and the castle
slowly fell into ruins.
At the present there is Spiš museum with a collection of medieval
arms, reconstrocted rooms, cellars, torture machines and
interesting kitchen room.
Spiš castle is the most visited tourist attraction in Košice region.
Caves of Slovak Karst
It is a group of caves that spread in national park Slovak Karst.
There are about 7000 caves in Slovakia, 15 of them are open to
public and 6 of them are on Unesco heritage list.
One of the largest cave in Europe is Dobšinská Ice cave. It was also
one of the first to have electric light.
The only one cave where you can enjoy underground boat trip is
Domica cave.
A visit to Krasnohorská Cave is a great adventure. Krasnohorská
cave is famous for its stalagmites, one of the stalagmites is 34 m
tall.
Ochtinská Aragonite Cave is one of the three aragonite caves in the
world open to public. Two others are located in Mexico and
Argentina. Some of the oldest aragonite formations are 140000
years old.
